De in 1872 opgerichte (sinds 1879 een Coöperatieve Vereeniging) Dordrechtsche Schildersbond vergaderde eerst in de Berkepoort, maar door de aanwas van het aantal leden en omdat de lokalen in de Berkepoort steeds vaker tot scholen werden ingericht, besloot men zich een eigen lokaal aan te schaffen. De eerste steen werd gelegd door de beschermheer mr. G.A. de Raadt op 1-11-1879 en in mei 1880 werd het gebouw in gebruik genomen. Het pand had 2 bovenwoningen 42rd en 44rd. Die deuren zaten geheel links en rechts. In het midden de dubbele deuren met nummer 42zw van de Schildersbond zelf.
